AdvertisementThe drama playing out within the upper ranks of Goldman Sachs is continuing to unfold, and CEO David Solomon's troubles with senior partners don't appear to be over yet. (Garcia's co-head of European investment banking, Anthony Gutman, is also said to have been named to the committee.) Bloomberg reported this week that Beth Hammack — a longtime Goldman partner, co-head of the global financial group, member of the management committee, and former CEO of Goldman Sachs Bank USA — is set to step down. And when Esposito broke the news last month of his imminent departure in a note to partners and clients, he wrote, wistfully, that he planned to "bleed Goldman Sachs forever." Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon famously had a side hustle as a DJ. Sources told the FT Solomon decided to stop playing at high-profile gigs because of criticism and media attention. Goldman Sachs partners are leaving — some 202 during David Solomon's five years as CEO by Insider's calculation. In particular, before Solomon, Goldman nurtured many fiefs and then spread the wealth from the most successful ones across the firm. Of the former Goldman executives that Insider interviewed, here are the most cited reasons they gave for leaving Goldman. When both men struggled, senior partners left, and Goldman stumbled in its efforts to wind down its balance-sheet investments. Goldman Sachs partners are paid well by any standard: $950,000 in base salary and often multiples of that in annual bonuses.

Goldman Sachs is having an identity crisis

I never thought I'd write this but … I miss the old Goldman Sachs. That was the voice of Goldman Sachs 2009 — the adamantine firm that managed to make its way through the crisis relatively unscathed. This sort of dry humor worked back then, but for today's Goldman Sachs, the joke just doesn't hit the same way. Van Praag — who was once dubbed "Goldman Sachs' Rococo PR prince" by The Observer — left the firm in 2012. It would be nice to see the old Goldman Sachs ferocity is still out there somewhere, even if it's not on Wall Street.

We know there are so many reasons why this bull market has eluded so many. It's sudden broadening into health care, transports and financials just when we were told the bull was slain by its lack of breadth. I hope readers here know that I felt that only by tuning out the Fed could you make maximum money in the market. You simply had to ignore the verbiage, block out the gasbags who simply failed to see the two-staged bull market right in front of them. Needless to say, if you needed any evidence that we are in a bull market, the rally in that dog may be enough to make the prosecution rest.

It's been non-stop negativity over at Goldman Sachs recently. The bad news just keeps rolling in over at Goldman Sachs. The Economist put a fine point on this earlier this year when it ran a cover story titled "The humbling of Goldman Sachs." But Goldman Sachs' historic partnership model has given it a distinct culture, where these kinds of things matter. Whatever the truth is, it's clear that Goldman Sachs and David Solomon are going to remain in the headlines for some time.

Goldman Sachs' COO, John Waldron, gave a speech on Thursday touting the firm's growth opportunities. One shareholder cites reports about Goldman Sachs CEO's use of the corporate jet. A shareholder of Goldman Sachs cited Goldman CEO David Solomon's personal use of the corporate aircraft at the company's annual meeting Wednesday morning in Dallas. Chesser put the proposal in terms of Goldman Sachs organizational processes that, he said, "look pretty weak." Solomon acknowledged Chesser's remarks, and moved to take questions before advancing to the next shareholder proposal and presentation. As Insider has previously reported, at least one other shareholder has asked Goldman's investor relations department for information about Solomon's personal use.

"The Board fully supports the use of the Goldman Sachs planes for travel, just as it supported the use of private aircraft by previous Goldman Sachs executives," said Tony Fratto, a company spokesman. "Executives at Goldman Sachs have been flying on private aircrafts for decades as it is proven to be the most secure, effective, and cost-efficient solution to meet the extensive travel obligations for CEOs of firms like Goldman Sachs — which is why all of our peer institutions also extensively use private aircraft." John Waldron, president of Goldman Sachs Reuters/Brendan McDermidOccasionally, Solomon and Waldron switch planes, particularly when Waldron flies overseas. Goldman Sachs has a sponsorship deal with pro golfer Patrick Cantlay. "These estimates wildly overstate the cost of such flights to Goldman Sachs and are not an accurate representation," he said.
Goldman Sachs had an option to buy a third Gulfstream when it bought two in 2019. Goldman Sachs has decided to scrap a plan to buy a third corporate jet for the company's use, a move that follows scrutiny of the CEO's plane use and a companywide plan to review expenses. The decision means that the company won't exercise an option it received in 2019, when it purchased two other Gulfstream jets: a G280 and a G650ER. Goldman also received an option to purchase a third jet, according to people briefed on the arrangement. Both of Goldman's planes feature simple paint jobs of thin blue and gray stripes running from nose to tail.
